Shirakami-Sanchi straddles Aomori and Akita prefectures. The global importance of its vast primeval Siebold's beech forest and ecosystem were recognized in December 1993 when it was registered by UNESCO as japan's first ever natural heritage site. Not just Japan but the entire world declared to preserve Shirakami-sanchi in perpetuity.
