A "bonden" is a large sacred wand that, according to Shinto belief, is used to attract spirits. The Bonden Festival is a religious ritual that is unique to Akita Prefecture, and it involves the offering of bonden to local shrines. Among the many iterations of the Bonden Festival, the one in Daisen is particularly unique as it involves the bonden crossing a river by boat to be offered at a shrine 207 meters above sea level.
