Sennin Shugyo takes place in Higashinaruse, in Akita Prefecture, and brings together all those seeking sennin certification from across Japan. A "sennin" is a sagacious person who turns his back on the affairs of men to live in the mountains. The training is held annually for three days at the beginning of August. Candidates must fast, perform zazen meditation, weave sandals and sit beneath waterfalls. After successfully performing zazen meditation on the third and final day, candidates will be awarded sennin certification.
