A "bonden" is a large sacred wand that, according to Shinto belief, is used to attract spirits. The Bonden Festival is a religious ritual that is unique to Akita Prefecture, and it involves the offering of bonden to local shrines. It is held annually on February 17. You won't want to miss the sight of courageous young men shouting and jostling each other as they carry their bonden to their shrine.
