川原毛地獄

Kawarage-Jigoku is one of the three most spiritual sites in all of Japan. Spewing steam and volcanic gas from its every orifice, the air around Kawarage-Jigoku is filled with the strong smell of sulfur. As you gaze upon its desolate landscape of ashy molten rock, you will think you are looking into the bowels of hell, which is befitting as "jigoku" means "hell".
Please note that Kawarage-Jigoku is not accessible by car from the beginning of November to early May as the roads are closed for the duration of the winter season.
