Shiraiwa Ware
With its impressive deep blue color, shiraiwa ware is one of Akita's representative crafts, with a 250 year history. However, all the producers disappeared for a time. The craft was revived in 1975. Currently, Shiraiwayaki Waheegama, in Kakunodate, Semboku City, is the only producer of shiraiwa ware.
A glaze called sea cucumber glaze, which gives shiraiwa ware its characteristic blue color, uses Akita rice hulls as the base ingredient. By using Akita soil with a strong red color in the foundation, it brings out the blue color even more. The beautiful blue containers bring a brilliant color scheme to cooking, the dinner table, and other situations. Besides containers, accessories are also being made, so please feel free to get your hands on some.
